Media Wall FAQs: 18 Questions, Answered by Installers

Answered by the team at MPS Media Walls Scotland — we install media walls every working day. Updated 13 July 2026.

What is a media wall?

A media wall is a purpose-built feature wall housing your TV, an electric fire, hidden storage and lighting in one cabinet unit, usually finished with acoustic slat panels. It replaces the TV stand and fireplace with a single built-in centrepiece — with every wire hidden inside.

How much does a media wall cost?

Professionally installed media walls cost £2,500–£4,500 in the UK in 2026. Our fully inclusive handmade packages are £3,200 (2.2m), £3,400 (2.4m) and £3,600 (2.7m) — fire or storage, LED lighting, acoustic panels, all trades and 1-day installation included. Full breakdown: media wall costs guide.

How long does installation take?

One day — if your installer has all trades in-house, as we do. In at 8am, finished wall by evening: joinery, electrics, fire, TV mounting and lighting. Companies that subcontract each trade typically take 3–10 days over multiple visits.

What size TV can go in a media wall?

Up to 100 inches. The wall is designed around your TV; most customers choose 55"–75".

Are media wall fires safe?

Yes. They're electric — LED flame effects, optional fan heat, no real flame, no gas, no flue. Safe around children and pets when installed by a qualified electrician, and effect-only mode costs pennies per hour to run.

Can all my wires really be hidden?

Yes — every cable is rerouted inside the cabinet, with double sockets hidden in the storage. Sky boxes and consoles live behind doors and work via HDMI without opening them.

What are the acoustic panels?

Wood slats on felt backing fitted around the cabinet. They add texture, absorb echo, and come in thin or thick slat styles — we offer 12 options.

What should a media wall be made from?

18mm furniture-grade MFC board (we use Egger) — 40+ colours, realistic textures, hard-wearing. Premium builds use grain-matched boards so the pattern flows unbroken across every door. Budget builds use MDF or plasterboard, which mark easily.

Handmade vs CNC — what's the difference?

CNC walls are machine-cut flat-pack kits assembled on site: cheaper, visible joins, no grain matching, and they assume your wall is flat. Handmade walls are built by joiners and scribed to your actual wall — a perfect fit even on wonky walls, grain matched throughout. Expect to pay £500–£1,000 more for handmade; it's the difference you can see from across the room.

Do media walls damage the wall?

No — they're fixed like fitted furniture. Remove one and you'd simply redecorate behind, as with any fitted wardrobe.

Can I have a media wall without a fire?

Yes. Storage-only builds swap the fire for a floating storage cabinet at the same package price.

Does a media wall add value to my home?

It's consistently among the most requested living-room features from UK buyers and photographs superbly in listings. Its main value is daily enjoyment; sellability is the bonus.

Do I need planning permission?

No — internal joinery with an electric fire needs no planning permission or building warrant anywhere in the UK.

What colours are available?

40+ Egger finishes: woodgrains, textiles, marbles, concrete, slate, metallics. Most popular in Scotland right now: warm greys, oak grains and textured canvas.

How do I maintain it?

Damp microfibre cloth for the boards, soft brush or vacuum for the panels. Electric fires need no servicing.

Chimney breast? Alcove? Uneven wall?

All fine — handmade walls are built to your room. This is exactly where handmade beats flat-pack.

What size should I choose?

2.2m for standard rooms, 2.4m for rooms around 4m wide (our most popular), 2.7m for a full statement wall. Custom sizes available.

How far ahead should I book?

Good installers book 4–8 weeks out — longer before Christmas. A quote locks your price; a deposit reserves your date.
